Full Fibre Broadband is Coming to Sheffield
Fibre broadband across the UK
Fibre Broadband is being implemented across the UK. In fact, 95% of the country can already access the improved speeds that fibre brings. This widely accessible fibre broadband is also known as FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet). While this can provide a more reliable connection, with speeds of up to 80Mbps, there is more modern technology, providing even faster speeds, out there. You can find a breakdown of the different types of broadband on our recent blog post.
Openreach is the organisation responsible for the implementation of FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) across the UK. They expect to provision 4 million premises by the end of March 2021. The next 36 locations for FTTP have recently been announced, as part of the next stage of the programme. The exciting news for us is that one of those locations is Sheffield.
Fibre broadband in Sheffield
Openreach have recently announced that Sheffield is one of the next 36 cities to benefit from the rollout. FTTC is currently available to 96% of homes and businesses across the city. However, Sheffield council are supporting the idea of residents and businesses having access to the next generation of technology as soon as possible. You can read the full press release on the Openreach website. Openreach will work with the Superfast South Yorkshire programme to bring this technology to more places across Sheffield.
Superfast South Yorkshire is a programme that is supporting the rollout of FTTP to areas that the commercial rollout will not reach. Some of this work has already been completed, which means that in a handful of areas, FTTP is already available.
