All About 5G
News about 5G is everywhere. But what does it actually mean for you?
5G is the next generation of mobile technology. It promises to offer a faster, more reliable connection than 4G, in the busiest parts of the UK’s largest cities. 5G is now live on some networks in up to 7 cities, with multiple networks introducing it to more areas later this year and next year.
It uses a higher frequency than 4G and has more bandwidth. This means more devices can be connected, while receiving a faster and more reliable connection.
Benefits
More reliable connection
Currently, networks can often reach their limits in busy areas. At large events, such as a football match or concert, your connection can often slow, or even disappear.
You may have seen coverage of some of the leading providers trialling 5G in busy areas, like sports stadiums and train stations. They show how the new technology will allow you to video call and stream in areas where you might usually struggle to get a connection.
Faster speeds
Fed up of watching websites load and videos buffer? 5G can prevent these issues by providing a much faster connection.
You could binge-watch a box set on your journey home that you downloaded in minutes at the station. Or, spend a few seconds grabbing a doc from the cloud for your meeting. Completing tasks is a breeze with these new speeds, which means you can get more done in a shorter space of time.
How do I use it?
To get connected, you will need one of the latest devices, that is 5G ready, along with a plan that includes a connection to the 5G network.
The high-speed, reliable connection means that you’ll be likely to burn through even more data than before. However, with a range of deals available, from multiple networks, you’ll be able to find something that suits your needs.
Does 5G replace 4G?
No, in short.
It simply adds an extra layer to networks. If you’re in a 5G area, and have the correct device and tariff, you will be connected. Once you move into an area without 5G coverage, your device will simply connect to the next available network (i.e. 4G).
4G will continue to remain the foundation of the UK’s network for the foreseeable future. In fact, there are networks that are continuing to expand their 4G network, alongside their 5G venture. This ensures that networks are improving for everyone.
On some networks, 5G will be coming to Sheffield before the end of 2019. We can help you get connected as soon as it’s available. Get in touch today if you want to find out more.
